SHOOTING THE BREEZE.  .  .Carolyn Carr
Everybody loves a parade—especially Balboa Islanders.  And we had a great parade to Celebrate Newport Beach’s 100 Years.
Go to the Balboa Island Parade 2006 Link on this Website to See all the Pictures and many more.
What I could put on the Front page of the Island Breeze as it was distributed on Balboa Island is much more limited than what is here on the website!!!

JIM’s STORIES
This month our story comes from Mary Hardesty, a long time Balboa Island Resident and Realtor .
Jim called me one morning after I bought my house on Emerald.  He said that he woke up that morning and thought of the bottle of sake that Mrs. Scott, who had owned my house, gave him in the 1950s. The sake was stored in his house and he just knew if he died his kids wouldn’t know what it was and would throw it away.
Jim knew Mrs. Scott over many years and the bottle of sake represented a lot of good memories.
Jim said, “I am going to give you the sake, but don’t drink it—after all these years it won’t be any good .”
Jim brought the bottle to my house along with a note from Mrs. Scott thanking Jim for all the handyman repairs he had done for her.
Jim also explained that Mrs. Scott’s house was the Island gathering place when the power went out during the 1940s.“I keep the bottle on a shelf with the note in a place of honor,” Mary says.
A funny side note—one of Mary’s sons—Michael John—told his mom many years after it happened that he used to go to Mrs. Scott’s kitchen window and she would give him treats if he would say “Please and Thank You!!!” Now that window belongs to his mom!

POETRY BY FAITH BOWLUS

REFLECTIONS ON LIFE
By Faith Bowlus

Subtle Patterns
Watch closely---
Small things seeming insignificant
Sometimes are just this.
Yet, as with a slipped stitch,
Unravelling may follow.

Watch closely--
To redo may leave a pattern
Incomplete:
A needless missing link.

Tapestry
I like to search
For small openings
Within the fabric
Of a gripping, ongoing
Problem in life;
Small openings through which
A bit of fresh air
Can pass.

Life!
Our entire life
Can burst
At a given moment.
Life!  May it be
A jewel to treasure!

So often what it
Does to us
Stems
From what we do to it.

MORE ON TEFLON
Neighbor Ed Siebel brought me an article from the Wall Street Journal (12/2/2005) about FryPanMan (on the internet) in Oregon.  FryPanMan will strip your old Teflon pans and recoat them for $29.00—better than throwing them away as suggested in last month’s Island Breeze.
Ed tried it, wrote the Journal and they printed the information— it really works!!!

PEOPLE WHO LOVE OUR ISLAND . . . . BARBARA VENEZIA
image
Who in Newport Beach doesn’t recognize our favorite local television star, Barbara Venezia.  I am not a night person, but I used to stay up and watch Barbara and John Crean cook up those “healthy” meals on the late night show “At Home on the Range.”
The late Helen Wick and her husband Don, Mike and I went and watched a taping of the show in the “garage” - what wonderful fun that was!!!
When I heard Barbara’s name pop up again I was interested.  She invited me to her home in Santa Ana Heights for an interview and explained how she and John met and started the “cooking” show.  They had 3000 requests for tickets when the show ended.
Since “At Home on the Range” has left the air Barbara has been busy in Santa Ana Heights working with the PAC.  The PAC is a redevelopment agency in the unincorporated area of Santa Ana Heights which, at the time Barbara found it, was not addressing the needs of that community.  Barbara stepped up to the plate and after six years elected president.
Barbara is now our candidate for Newport Beach City Council in District 4.  We recently had a “friend raiser” here on the Island at Donna DiBari’s where with over 100 in attendance—an unheard of number at an event of that type.
Did you see my “Vote BV to Win” T-shirt at the Balboa Island Parade? You can get one just like it at Champagne clothing store in the Ralph’s Westcliff Center, 1116 Irvine Avenue, NB.  It is the latest in “campaign couture” - better than campaign mail, annoying phone calls and boring political commercials!! Store owners Joan and Danie Howard love the idea and are marketing the t-shirts right along with their other high end clothing.  Wear it with pride!!
Seriously, Barbara would be an asset to our city council.  We need more elected, not appointed, officials.  We need people who listen.  People like us.  People who love Newport Beach and want to see Smart Growth, A New City Hall (with ALL options considered), An Emergency Preparedness Plan and a State of the Art Aquatic Center. Barbara say, “ I am doing this because I can and will make a difference!!” http://www.bvtowin.com

BREAK-INS on THE BAYFRONT
Betty Walsh from Coldwell Banker called me recently to ask me to put a reminder to everyone in the newsletter.  It is summer and there are lots of people on the Island as well as off-island builders and workmen.
At 1206 S. Bayfront someone broke in through an unlocked side garage door, smashed a car window and stole several thousands of dollars of electronic equipment.  A similar break-in occurred near Emerald and South Bayfront.
Christie Collier, of Island Chiropractic, also told me they have lost three locked bicycles from behind the Island Market on South Bayfront.
Locks are not deterring these people—take your electronics in your house with you.  Lock your doors.  I know this is a sad state of affairs.  Balboa Island is coming into the 21st century :(

TIPS OF THE MONTH
Tea boosts your immune system.  It fights colds, flu, cancer.  Scientists from Harvard Medical School and Brigham have conducted immunity studies.  They found a molecule in tea which activates certain components of the immune system called gamma delta T lymphocytes which are important as the first line of defense against infections and tumors.
Researchers at the University of Washington have found that the first sign of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, may not be mental decline.  Instead, it is quiet likely to be physical decline, especially difficulty walking and maintaining balance.  What everyone thinks is a brain ailment may be related to physical fitness.  Regular exercise can protect you by boosting blood flow to the brain—so get out there and do it!!!
KEEP THOSE OLD CELL PHONES COMING TO ISLAND FLOORING—We have now donated 5 large boxes to Phones4Life—every phone is a life saved!  Now it is also illegal to trash them.
