Thanks again to all of the volunteers who worked on the Underground Utilities—on both sides.  It was an issue that was important to all of us and the vote was definitely a squeeker.

Now it is time to enjoy our Island and each other—so come to the BIIA Parade, Pancake Breakfast, and Island Barbeque and hug your neighbors and think of all the really great things about living on Balboa Island.  And just be grateful that the whole issue is behind us!!! I know Pam Kallestad and I are both extremely grateful!!!

My friend Dea Burton asked me about a new water park in Huntington Beach.  I hadn’t heard of it.  The Internet is my friend and sure enough—there is a wonderful new water park at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach.

The water park has water slides, two fire pits, pool cafe and bar, and a children’s wading pool and Jacuzzi. Guests of the new Slyders water playground will enjoy private poolside cabanas, equipped with TV and Internet access, and access to Shubee’s Poolside Bar and Café for the perfect escape from the sun. Seasonal day passes for non-resort guests will include access to both resort pools, a reduced parking rate for the day, and complimentary pool towels and toys. Camp Hyatt activities are also available to keep little ones entertained with fun activities such as hair braiding, temporary tattoos, dive in movies, and cookie decorating. A convenient Birthday Party package secures a private cabana, a selection of lunch packages, cake service, and more.

HAVE FUN AND ENJOY MEMORIAL DAY—SUMMER IS HERE!!!

ISLAND CHIROPRATIC AND SPA

I have a new neighbor, Dr. Nik Kambourakis recently took over Island Chiropractic and Spa on the Bay when my old friend Dr. Christie Collier (Bear’s Mom) followed her Under the Tuscan Sun dream and moved to Italy in March. Bear and Christie flew first class! Christie is working with someone a few of you may remember, ex- Island resident Lucy, who opened Villa Lucia outside Florence, Italy.
Dr. Kambourakis specializes in family health with a focus on prenatal care and cranial sacral adjustments.  He splits his time between Island Chiropractic and his other office in Sherman Oaks.  Island Chiropractic has undergone some renovations since his arrival and looks terrific.  He has also added to the massage staff and I have had the pleasure of trying out the new therapist
Gianina who is really relaxing.  Spa on the Bay is located at 504 South Bayfront.  Make an appointment and be ready to relax!!!
Take advantage of Dr. Kambourakis’ arrival since he is running several introductory specials making it rather affordable to feel good again. Dr. Nik is from my old summer playground, Windsor, Ontario, Canada—he is really a great human being as well as a terrific chiropractor.  Call him at 949.723.0702 or stop in at 128 Agate Avenue.

GLORIETTA BAY
Ever since he saw an article in the Los Angeles Times, Mike has wanted to go to the Glorietta Bay Inn on Coronado Island. (http://www.gloriettabayinn.com ), so when they recently had a spring special—buy two nights, get the third FREE—we jumped at the chance to go.  It was everything we imagined it would be.  On previous trips we had stayed in the City of San Diego and only visited the waterfront right across the Bay on Coronado Island—so this was not only a chance to see a new hotel—but a new place as well.

The Glorietta Bay is part Mansion and part newer Suites and Rooms—about 10% have wonderful views and our room did. Our patio looked out on a quiet street across from a harbor and we could see the bay and the sailboats.  Out of our other floor to ceiling window we could see the pool.  The insulation was superb— I never heard any of the children splashing in the pool when I took my afternoon nap.

Our room was like some of the smaller timeshares we have visited—it had a small refrigerator, a microwave, dishes and a coffee pot.  I always like to have these types of amenities when I travel.  The towels—oh the towels—made of ring spun cotton—the softest towels I have ever encountered in a hotel.  I wanted to take a shower or a swim just so I could enjoy drying off with the towels!

Continental breakfast was excellent.  Bagels, Pastries, Fresh Fruit, Cereal, Juice and even Cappuccino (Coffee and Cappuccino available all day).  I got up and ate around 7 am and then took a tray back to Mike in the room—if you stay in the Penthouse they will deliver the food to you!  It was Mother’s Day so everyone got a lovely orchid stem with a greeting—as a testament to its freshness, it is still blooming on my desk as I write this article over a week later.

The staff was efficient and friendly—we were always greeted with a smile.  From General Manager Holly Ansley and her efficient and ever present co-worker Georgia at the front desk to the people who cleaned the rooms and arranged the breakfast.  Everyone was welcoming and helpful.  I merely had to ask and my questions were more than answered.

And as a bonus, it was the Red Bull Air Show weekend—Mike got to see the air show from the shore of Coronado—it was a delightfully unexpected surprise.  It was a wonderful, relaxing weekend—the only downside was that it didn’t last longer!!

TIPS OF THE MONTH

GET FREE FIREWOOD . . . Check with your local tree services to see if you can come to a worksite and collect trimmed branches.  You get free wood and they save on hauling and dumping fees.

POSTPONE THE DOUGHNUT HOLE—don’t include generic prescriptions in your Medicare Part D purchases.  Pharmacies offer a wide range of generics whereas most Part D plans claim the ‘average retail price’ which is much higher.

CLEAN YOUR COFFEEMAKER WITH VINEGAR—Pour equal parts vinegar and water into the machine’s water chamber, then switch on the brew cycle.  Halfway through, turn off the coffeemaker and let the solution sit for about an hour.  Turn it on again to complete the cycle.  Then run several cycles with clean water.

CLEAN YOUR DISHWASTER WITH VINEGAR—Pour 1/2 cup of vinegar into the reservoir and run an empty cycle.
