SHOOTING THE BREEZE.  . . . Carolyn Carr

Thank you to all the wonderful people who called, e-mail and texted me during and after the 21st Annual All Island Garage Sale.  It is nice to know that the Garage Sale has become an “event” that so many people enjoy—walking and talking with friends and neighbors, eating, shopping and even bringing business to the local merchants.  How it has transformed itself in the past 20 plus years!! This is a true example of doing the footwork and letting go of the results, or “Woman plans, God laughs”.  I love that we all can look forward to spring and cleaning out our garage and home and visiting with our neighbors and former neighbors.  After the long, rainy winter it was like we were all coming out of the cocoon we had been locked in all winter.

Thanks to Derek and Axel, my banner hanging crew.  They make a difficult task look easy.  They come to my house, grab the banner and the bungee cords, and when I come over the bridge to the island—there it is—straight and beautiful.  Thank you . . . Thank You!!!

Thanks to my sponsors—Sue Podany of Prudential California Realty, Derek Hagmann Painting, Island Flooring and of course, Starbucks who donate free coffee. Ray, our local Starbucks manager is a real gem—he does a great job of managing our Starbucks on Marine Avenue.

image
Sue Podany also donated 4 cases of bottled water for the healthy drinkers smile Sue is one of the Island Breeze’s regular advertisers.  Think of Sue when you list your house for sale.

image
And a huge thank you to Helen, Katie and everyone at Even Sisters.  You did a great job of collecting all the Garage Sale Applications and putting up with all the questions!!!

Thank you to everyone who signed up—this year I had the greatest participation!!!!!

Thank you also to the individuals who donated—I had to laugh when one woman wrote “For the Cheaters!” when she sent me an extra donation.  Balboa Island really is a special place!!

LAST MONTH’S PICTURE . . .
image
The boy on the Bicycle is our own Randy Seton—at his wedding The bride was Diane Marchesi and it took place in June, 1957, when Diane was all of four years old and he was an older man of five!  Their mothers,  Amelia Seton and Helen Marchesi, were dear friends, and I guess in 1957,  matchmaking and having pretend weddings for pre-kindergarteners  [Amelia made my veil!!] seemed very logical, not to mention, totally appropriate.  The other kids in the photo were Diane’s maids of honor!
The photo of our “wedding”  took place in our back yard in the Silverlake neighborhood of Los Angeles. We all attended Silverlake Presbyterian Church, and our families spent days together at various beaches, especially Redondo and Catalina. My sister, Marsha [now Ferrall], was a good friend of Hetty Seton and Randy and I hung out.   The Setons moved to Balboa a few years later, and our lives went their own ways.  My sister, Marsha [now Marsha Ferrall, and living on Lido] moved to Balboa in the 1960s and lived with Marilyn; they have remained good friends. (PS Randy says this proves he has been married!!)

CDM AND AIRPORT NOISE
The fine folks of Corona del Mar have finally been made aware of the problem Balboa Island residents have had for years—airport noise.  The airport has been “spreading the wealth” to their neighborhood lately and they are incensed that they have to bear any of the brunt of it.  Where were they when we were trying to get an airport at El Toro????  And why do they think property values in their town will decrease—we have not seen that on Balboa Island!!!  Unless they are just less tolerant than we are smile

Their website is http://www.stopairplanenoise.com Log on and make a comment like I did if you think they Should be sharing the wealth.  Here are my comments:

Where were all you Corona del Mar residents when we on Balboa Island were working to get an airport at El Toro.  And why do you think you should be exempt from airplane noise.  I have read comments in the Daily Pilot that indicate you are not even aware that there are no restrictions on private planes - they can take off at 6:30 am or 5:30 am or even in the middle of the night if they want to.  The airport runways are NOT closed - they are just restricted from commercial aviation.
Now that you have to bear some of the noise that we on Balboa Island, Back Bay (my friends have noise insulating windows and air conditioning), The Bluffs, etc. have for years - you suddenly notice there is noise.
We could have used your help on the El Toro issue - where were you??? You use John Wayne just like the rest of us. I’ll bet you don’t go to LAX or Ontario to save a plane from flying out of John Wayne.  Get involved with AirFare or one of the other organizations that are working to keep the airport from becoming 24 hours at some point.
And by the way - the airport noise has NOT kept property values down any where in Newport Beach - that is propaganda on your part.

THERE IS ALWAYS AN UPSIDE

I was out of town for a recently and had several people watching my house and my kitty Magic for me.  Upon my return all the LA Times were not waiting for me.  My fabulous neighbor, Kristine Taft, said she was up at 6 am and there were no papers.  I have lived here 20 years—10 on Agate with plenty of tourist traffic—never have my papers disappeared during a vacation.

My paper person, Filipe , said, “Yes, he had delivered the papers. “ I asked him if he could hold my papers whenever I left .  He assured me he could and if I asked him personally it would save him a $5.00 charge that the Times assessed him.

WOW—it is amazing how the guy at the end of the line always pays the price.  Here is a guy who gets up in the middle of the night to make sure we have our newspapers—and the Times makes him pay when we have vacation holds!!!

I will make sure I always get up early before my next departure and tell him myself—or I could give him the $5.00 when I see him!!!  I learned something new today—yes, there is always an upside!!

GIVING

“Extreme Downsizing” is the mantra of the day—try it out—it will make your spirit feel lighter—and you can also give of yourself and your “stuff” to those who really need it. Remember:

Volunteers Live Longer
Giving Helps You Overcome Stress
Dopamine, Serotonin and Oxytocin are “Feel Good Chemicals that flood the brain when you help others and can lift mild to moderate depression.
People who use money to benefit others feel happier than those who use it for themselves.

One way you can give and get a treat for yourself is to sign up with Credo Long Distance Service ttp://www.credolongdistance.com/ You get free Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream and part of the profits go to help others.  I have had it for over 30 years!

Finally—your kids may pretend to like your “stuff” - but as ‘estate’ sales on the island prove—they will dump it as soon as you leave this planet smile

PET OXYGEN MASKS . . . . . . .From the Internet:

My name is Debra Jo and my dog Emma Zen is the Canine Ambassador for Biker Dogs and Leader of TEAM O2, a fundraising effort for Pet Oxygen Masks. On April 21we delivered a set of Oxygen Masks specially designed to fit muzzles and snouts of canine, felines and other household pets to Newport Beach FD Balboa Island. We raise funds and then donate to our local departments, so that the fire people, those first responders on the scene, have the right equipment to help save our pets lives in cases of emergency!

Debra has been doing this for about 8 months now. It’s no big fanfare, she just drops off the kits at the stations and then moves on to trying to establish them in another station. Balboa Island is so pet friendly Debra felt it was a shame that people who live here were not aware of the equipment now carried on their station’s engine! Your pets now have a chance at resuscitation if smoke inhalation occurs during a fire. Next time you see a Newport Beach Fireman on the island, say, “Thank you for caring about my pets! “

Emma Zen will be having a birthday party on June 26th at 3:00 pm at 2400 N. Canal Street, Orange, CA 92865.  She will be asking for a $10.00 donation to attend. At 4:00 pm a Pet First Aid and CPR course will be given by pet expert Denise Fleck of Sunny Dog Ink Your contributions will be used in the Pet Oxygen Mask fundraising efforts. Firefighters can attend for free. Dogs are also allowed to attend!  RSVP 714.742.8895 .
